During the summers her mom sobers up and runs a small art business. During the autumn she falls off the wagon and sometimes disappears, leaving Claude to clean up the broken bottles, the spills on the rug, and the stains. Make a mess and leave. Claude's mother had been doing this for years, but this time felt different. The book Buried begins with a morning phone call when Claude's friend needs school help. After cleaning the trashed trailer Claude meets her friend Liz, whose father is an alcoholic. Unable to face the fact that her mother has disappeared again, Claude tells her therapy group that her mother has checked herself into rehab. Gradually Claude begins to believe the lie herself, despite all the evidence that something is different this time about her mother's disappearance. A high school senior, Claude holds life together by using sticky note reminders and cleaning obsessively. But soon her life's problems are spiraling out of control, despite everyone's intentions to help her. Author Robin Merrow MacCready fills the pages with honest, raw emotions. As the book hurtles toward an astonishing conclusion it's impossible to put down. Fresh, vivid writing keeps the dialogue and scenarios realistic. In the end Claude must deal with years of angry denial and enabling, and watching her do so is encouraging and uplifting.
