his is the third in C.J. Carmichael's
Return to Summer Island
trilogy, focusing on six friends after the murder of superstar jazz singer Simone DeRosier. Though the last to join the group, Simone became the brightest star among them, beautiful, vivacious, and full of life. Her recording of a song about friends and loyalty made her a world famous star. Since her death, the friends have parted ways, and have not gathered together in a long time.
J
ennifer was the only other woman in this group, the shy and quiet one who usually let her best friend Simone shine. When biographer Nick Lancaster comes to town to research Simone, Jennifer warns the others not to talk to him, in case he tarnishes Simone's reputation. They are loyal to Jennifer, and keep their word. However, Nick finds his way into Jennifer's life, and as he gets to know her, he realizes that Jennifer was not out to protect her friend Simone, but someone else, herself. Nick knows that Jennifer's hiding something, but she refuses to talk.
I
've enjoyed the characters in this series and the story that revolves around them. In this episode, each friend is in some sort of turmoil because of Simone - either as a spurned lover, an ex-husband, or the best friend who stood in the background while Simone won fame and glory. The key to the mystery is one item Nick gathers from Jennifer – Simone directed her most famous song to someone, but no one knows who it is. Nick focuses on this secret, which is revealed - along with Jennifer's true feelings about her friend - at the end of the book.
Secrets Between Them
delivers a great conclusion to an engaging trilogy.
