Anna Sandoval arrives on the island of Crete, seeking a refuge. She needs to heal from pain caused by the death of her husband Paul (from a sudden heart attack) realizing her pain is only stimulated by well-meaning friends who counsel her that time will heal her wounds. Anna steps into another world, a golden one filled with sunshine and new friends and a chance to discover who she is other than Paul Sandoval's wife and the mother of his children.

But faced with - among other things - topless beaches and the local custom of late dining, she realizes she is all alone and not sure that's what she wants. Anna's reawakening is a joy to read about. Her vacation on the island of Crete is also a pleasure to share. Rosanne Keller's take on that wonderful place makes it a vacation spot for the reader as Anna travels the island, both alone and with a male companion.

Anna makes friends with local residents and begins to find answers to some pretty powerful questions. She learns life lessons - many applicable to all of us - through good advice from people who have been there and done that. At times, Anna has conversations with herself that could easily reflect our own soliloquies - except here there's a storybook ending. But storybook endings can be very good, as is the case in A Summer All Her Own.
