V
eteran freelance writer and author Robert Bly has written the quintessential guide to starting your own freelance writing business. Bly claims that there is a huge demand for freelancers and throughout this book, he guides the reader as how to tap into this market.
T
he book contains virtually everything you need to know to get started; the content and tone are very encouraging for would-be writers or people without a whole lot of writing experience. The sheer volume of business-oriented freelance work available is astounding. Examples of the types of projects for freelance writers include catalogues, brochures, direct-mail packages, infomercials, manuals, newsletters and press releases.
B
ly provides guidelines for the ins and outs of your business, once it is established - such as how to garner business, how much you should charge, how to deal with problem clients, etc.. Especially useful are appendices in the back giving examples of sales pitch letters, sample contracts and other resources. One caveat: this book is not for people who want to make money writing magazine articles or publishing fiction: his focus is solely on the commercial freelance writing market.
B
ly has written an extremely comprehensive, easy to read, and well-organized primer. If being a commercial freelance writer is your dream, you will likely close the book feeling more confident in your abilities to achieve that goal.
