ail McCarthy - a horse vet who is seven months pregnant with her first child - receives a phone call in the middle of the night summoning her to her cousin Jenny's nearby ranch on Monterey Bay. Jenny is sure she is being stalked, but refuses to give Gail her reasons for thinking so. Action moves quickly through this book, with suspense building rapidly. With Gail pregnant, the reader almost walks with her to hold her elbow over rough ground. Gail, always able to handle things on her own, asks for no help when she goes to Jenny's ranch again. At night. Feeling awkward and bloated, she manages to have a rip-snorting, breath-holding climax that solves the problems and allows her to go on and safely nurture the baby she's carrying.
