Helena of Rivenloch, raised as a Warrior Maid, is determined to save her youngest sister Miriel from marriage to a foreigner, Sir Pagan Cameliard. First, she tries to murder the groom but - in her drunken state - she fails. So instead she takes his right hand man, Sir Colin Du Luc, captive for ransom. When she discovers that her older sister Deirdre has married Sir Pagan instead of Miriel, Helena is furious and vows to seduce him to save her sister. Colin can't understand Helena's disdain for Normans, but as time goes on her opinion lightens, especially after she has unleashed her passion and lain with him at night. The pair fall into some dangerous situations and when Colin is injured, Helena discovers that she might care for him a little more than she realized. And Colin is slowly starting to like the Hel-fire who captured him, but she has no plans to wed him. Helena is a strong heroine who enchants immediately. She is a feisty girl who can take care of herself and makes you laugh. Colin is not only amused by her, but is concerned that she takes chances and wants to protect her. The way their relationship develops kept me turning pages, wanting to see them finally give in to their passions. Sarah McKerrigan has a way of drawing readers in from the first page - I recommend Captive Heart to those who enjoy historical romances.
