T
he book jacket describes Anita Renfroe as a humorist who does talks - called
live comedy concerts
- in front of Christian groups.
If It's Not One Thing, It's Your Mother
deals with many aspects of motherhood from pregnancy to childbirth to dealing with teenagers to what she calls a
Momwich
. A Momwich is the experience of being caught between your daughter and your mother, perhaps all living in the same house, making yourself the filling between those two slices of humanity.
R
enfroe skates lightly over motherhood, however. There are no real, earth-shaking problems dealt with in this book. In fact, there is nothing that can't be resolved by talking about the problem or praying about it. For a book billed as humorous, the blatant Christianity, frequent references to the Bible, and a sincere belief that there are no problems that cannot be solved by faith and prayer seem jarring to this reader. I read the book expecting it to be a humorous take on motherhood, but found it so preachy in tone that I was happy to get to the end.
