Soul Kitchen is the third in the series about the escapades of chefs, restaurateurs and long time lovers Rickey and G-man. The novel opens with a murder that occurs ten years previously and shifts to present day where the couple are enjoying the success of their restaurant Liquor. Every dish at the establishment contains liquor as an ingredient and as in the prior novels, mystery, humor and good eats provide the perfect recipe for an entertaining read.

This time around, Rickey gives a job to Milford Goodman, a man who was on the verge of culinary success as a chef before being wrongfully convicted of murder. When DNA evidence frees him, he finds his way to Rickey and G-man's kitchen and that's when trouble starts cooking. Rickey's growing dependence on pain killers, an unscrupulous doctor, a shady backer for a new restaurant and problems in Rickey and G-man's relationship provide the backdrop for this tasty bit of fiction.

As in the previous two books, Liquor and Prime, Soul Kitchen is set in pre-Katrina New Orleans and it is poignant that the novel was completed the night before the hurricane hit. Soul Kitchen engages all of the senses and also leaves the reader longing for what used to be in a city as well known for its characters as it is for its food. If you can stand the heat, dive into Soul Kitchen.
