When she is asked to move into the house of a brain damaged woman as her caregiver while she goes to university she agrees despite her mother's misgivings. When Rachel moves in, Grace spends her days sitting by the window, doing nothing and thinking nothing. Drool occasionally drops from her lips. Rachel is frightened of her, although she would never admit it to the lawyer who hired her. Soon Rachel begins to try to solve the puzzle of Grace's life. She finds letters, talks to people who knew her before the accident and truly begins to care about the attractive older woman. Rachel becomes acquainted with the friends who begin to visit Grace, and makes friends of her own at the university. As Rachel's life grows and the house begins to fill with life, laughter, and music, she and Grace both flower. Rachel learns a lot from taking care of Grace, including how much she doesn't know. In Finding Grace, Brugman has written a sweet, funny story with a mystery to be solved.
