ate is the personal assistant to Merlin at Magic, Spells, and Illusion Inc.. Her new assignment is to find a spy inside the company. Trafficking in benevolent sorcery, her company is the Microsoft equivalent for users of magic. Although she cannot do magic, Kate is a valuable employee because she is also not influenced by it.

eanwhile her love life is looking up. She has a second date with Ethan and is searching for the perfect outfit when her friend Gemma discovers a pair of candy apple red stilettos. Although she encourages Kate to buy them, Kate refuses, but later returns with her mother who is visiting from Texas. She purchases them despite her mother's objections, because they supply her with such confidence. (It turns out they also make her a male magnet when she wears them.)

ate realizes her mother is also immune to magic which means she can see all the strange happenings in her daughter's adopted city. There's not much magic in Texas so mom's never been put to the test. Kate can't wait to get her mother back on the airplane headed home. Kate seems to be losing her own magical immunity and is worried that she won't be able to do her job at Magic, Spells, and Illusion.
