The night his dare-devil sister goes missing, Kurt Carmody listens to the events of the tragedy replayed by his friends in a police station on Mystic Isle.

Beach parties on the island's burnt out pier are standard for the high school group that calls itself the Mystic Marvels. Goofing around on the pier is made even more exciting by the danger and the horror stories about the place. That fact that two people died there in the recent past adds to the tension.

This party is different. Tonight, a loaded handgun passed around like a toy will make this party part of the pier legend. When a shot is fired, Casey Carmody goes off the pier and is reported missing. Was she shot? Was it an accident? Has she drowned or did she manage to steer clear of the riptides?

While the Coast Guard looks for his sister in the dark treacherous waters off the coast, Kurt Carmody hears his friends give their versions of what happened that night. Although their accounts of the party and the months leading up to it reveal another crime, what happened to Casey remains a mystery. Even if she didn't pull the trigger, most people are sure Stacy Kearney is to blame. Kurt listens as jealousy, spite, and incomplete truths make Stacy a scapegoat and smear what is left of her reputation.

Two girls' lives hang in the balance as morning dawns. Carol Plum-Ucci has written another suspenseful mystery that will keep readers on the edge of their seats as time runs out on the possibility of finding Casey alive.
