Sophie again finds herself in the middle of a real life mystery when her brother-in-law, Bob, is found dead by Sophie's sister Leah. Leah is distraught over her husband's murder although Sophie has always despised him, a feeling that deepens when it becomes known that Bob was a philanderer with multiple mistresses. Though Leah is crushed by her deceased husband's betrayal, the police are less sympathetic and see her as a suspect. The local San Franciscans get involved politically, with one camp saying that Leah is using her heritage and race for sympathy while the other decries racial and religious profiling. Clearly, Leah needs help and her sister is a woman of action. Sophie shells out $12,000 to hire Private Investigator Anatoly Darinsky. Sophie and Anatoly have a history, so to speak, which has resulted in a love-hate relationship between the two (think flirting one minute and arguing the next). However, they successfully band together to start their own investigation of Bob's murder. After all, Sophie loves her sister and cannot fathom raising Leah's hair-raising and destructive toddler Jack, with his mother in jail. As the murder mystery develops, the reader is entertained by Sophie's quirky friends, her Jewish mother, cat Mr. Katz, and wild-child Jack. Plus, there are fireworks between Sophie and Anatoly that ignite throughout the story. I found myself laughing out loud as I turned the pages - Davis has a wonderful sense of humor that shines throughout this frothy, fun read. This book will appeal to fans of chick lit, contemporary romance, and light mysteries.
