eventeen-year-old Jade Leigh is sent to the principal's office - again. Nobody could be expected to sit quietly and listen to Mr. Parton drone on and on about angles and measurements without practically falling asleep. When he singles her out with a remarks about '
a wooden stake
' because of her goth clothing, she is goaded into sniping back.
I
t's a bad day for the principal. She's at the end of her rope, not just with Jade, but with Jade's mortal enemy, Mercedes Turner. Mercedes is a Barbie clone, the opposite of non-conformist Jade who dresses goth and doesn't hide her quick wit or her distaste for the Barbies and jocks of the school. Ms. Hamilton plans a creative punishment designed just for them. With their parents' permission, she drives them to a laboratory on the edge of town where they enter a virtual reality program.

howalter's alternate world is unique. Jade doesn't suddenly become a Barbie and Mercedes doesn't get a taste of what it's like to be an outcast. The Barbies are suddenly the outcasts and it is
fright
to be a goth. Told in first person by Jade, the plot is filled with twists and turns as the girls struggle to get back to their real world.
