In Secrets of Longevity, Dr. Maoshing Ni shares a hundred ways to live a long and happy life. Of his near death experience as a child, Ni says, 'The knowledge that made me whole again came from thousands of years of Chinese tradition of healing and rejuvenation, and I vowed that when I got well I would become a doctor and spread this tradition, to which I owed my life.' Marrying Eastern and Western traditions of well being, and incorporating research on centenarians, the author packs pages with informative suggestions for living a long life.

The book, divided into well thought out chapters, is at once holistic and a reference book on ailments you might encounter and on how to prevent specific illnesses. Five main chapters offer advice on What you eat, How you heal, Where you are, What you do, and Who you are. Follow the advice closely, from the basics of exercise and its benefits to making your environment dis-ease free, to increase your chances for a long, healthy, and happy life. Make your body (your temple) healthy, and your mind at peace with practical advice applied by centenarians.

For example, Dr. Ni tells us that 'Apple cider vinegar has antiseptic and antibiotic properties: it may also help to reverse atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, and dissolve gall and kidney stones.' He suggests getting regular massages to clear the lymph nodes, and suggests special Chinese herbs to heal and prevent certain ailments, as well as ways to promote peace of mind. There's advice for menopausal women (a.k.a in 'the second spring') and for prevention of cancers. Natural foods that act as 'weapons against aging' are listed. Celebrities have started to apply this valuable knowledge - among them, Helen Hunt states, 'Dr. Mao brings generations of experience, an abundance of knowledge about both Eastern and Western medicine, and his own good heart to his remarkable book.'

It's indeed a remarkable and accessible book. I especially like its ease of reference. Each piece of advice has its own page with clear information on benefits. Secrets of Longevity is an important book that can help you live the kind of life you hope to have. I highly recommend it for its simple advice and valuable health tips. Give a copy to someone you care about. It makes a great mother's day gift!
