But what does that entail? And what happens when they do discover their true identity? Larry Ackerman, an authority on organizational and personal identity, seeks to answer those questions in his latest book, The Identity Code. Ackerman's premise is basic and common sense. Despite being told as children that we can grow up and be whatever we want, there are precious few ballerinas, pro football players, or U.S. presidents. Ackerman theorizes that people are already coded to be what we are supposed to be as adults. Much like a genetic code, people also have this identity code. The key is to unlock and decipher it by asking Ackerman's 8 Essential Questions. Through these questions, he attempts to guide the reader through a life-transforming process, with the end result being a greater self understanding and a greater capacity for understanding and love. Throughout The Identity Code, readers examine what makes them special, where they are going, what patterns exist in their lives, and who they can trust, along with other questions. Set within this framework of analysis, Ackerman provides real-life case scenarios to demonstrate the life-shifting changes possible and to offer inspiration to the reader. The author also provides the laws of identity. Ackerman's writing style though at times seems stilted, making the book flow awkwardly. While his credentials are certainly impressive, this wouldn't be a page turner for most, unless one is actively seeking out their own identity or a self-help book junkie.
