ideon Rayburn is the new kid at Midvale Academy - a fancy New England prep school. Like most new kids he feels completely out of place and alone. Instantly upon arriving, he is greeted by a bevy of flawless-seeming teenage beauties whom his embarrassing father tries to charm. Somehow in the process, one of the girls connects with Gideon and becomes able to read his thoughts, without his knowing. The clever trick to the book is that the reader doesn't know which girl in the story can read Gid's mind.
T
houghtful Gid quickly discovers that his roommates appear to have no scruples. They launch into smoking pot, drinking, sleeping around, and sneaking out. Worse still for Gideon, they make a bet based on his ability to lose his virginity by Halloween. Gideon wants to be liked and admires their carefree attitudes. He goes along with the bet, targeted towards Molly McGarry, one of the haughty girls Gid first met. Somewhere along the way, he falls for another girl and has some tough decisions to make.
T
his page-turner quickly moves along as the reader watches Gideon become more confident. A great mix of diary, dialogue, and personal commentary by the girl reading Gid's mind keep this humorous and sweet book going. She develops a crush on Gideon, realizing that he is attractive, funny, and intuitive. As the book concludes, Gideon discovers much about himself and his friends. The reader also discovers the identity of the mystery girl - an identity that the author manages to keep hidden throughout the book's emotional ups and downs.
