F
our of today's rising paranormal stars team up in this loosely themed collection,
Dates From Hell
. Kim Harrison kicks off the fun with
Undead in the Garden of Good and Evil
, featuring Ivy Tamwood. Like the full-length novels, this one's also set in The Hollows and shows Ivy's dissatisfaction over being held back within the ranks of Inderland Security. Rather than resort to sexual favors, she figures out alternate ways to impress Art, her vampire supervisor.
L
ynsay Sands provides another amusing, if predictable tale in
The Claire Switch Project
. When an unscrupulous colleague sets Claire Bennet up to get zapped by an experimental molecular destabilizer, she and her boss Kyle are livid. At first, they believe there have been no adverse side effects, but when Claire morphs into identical copies of cover models and movie stars at her high school reunion, trouble and fun begin brewing.
L
ori Handeland offers up an intriguing story with great spin-off potential in
Dead Man Dating
. When Kit Morelli realizes that her online date is really a demon/incubus out to devour her soul, she has her hands full trying to elude the creature. Things look up when a rogue demon hunter shows up to help her figure out how to destroy the demon.
T
he cream of this quartet is Kelley Armstrong's
Chaotic
where a halfling chaos demon finds herself attending a boring museum function with an even more boring blind date. Since part of Hope's genetic make-up thrives on chaos, she can only wish that something exciting will happen. It certainly does when she gets mixed up with werewolf jewel thief Karl Marsden, who's the target of a sorcerer's revenge. Those who've followed Armstrong's werewolf series will remember the suave Marsden. He and Hope have wonderful potential; here's hoping they show up in their own full length story soon.
