A psychiatrist approaches Inspector Espinosa of the Rio de Janeiro police department to ask for help in finding his daughter. The father believes the young woman disappeared when in the company of a disturbed patient of his.

Pursuit is the fifth in the Inspector Espinosa series. He and his cohorts at the station are comfortable with their roles and work well together. Espinosa himself seems very unlike the brash, demanding, unfeeling officers who often pepper crime novels. He has compassion and feelings for the victims of crime as well as for the criminal.

The doctor comes to believe that this disturbed patient is now stalking him. Since this young man appeared in his office, terrible things have been happening to him and his family. His marriage disintegrates, the daughter in question is hospitalized for a mental breakdown – the list goes on.

As good as Espinosa and his team are, the end of the story is a complete surprise. The plot is loosely woven but meshes easily, leaving the reader to reach his or her own conclusions.

Garcia-Roza writes of the streets of Rio as though the reader is familiar with them – but that is no handicap. Rio is not a character in this tale. The well-defined players come alive as the story progresses and that is enough. Pursuit offers a rather chilling plot, that one hopes is pure imagination and not drawn from life.
