Some Danger Involved    by Will Thomas Order:  USA  Can Touchstone, 2005 (2004) Hardcover, Softcover, e-Book Read an Excerpt      Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Tom Llewelyn, down on his luck in Victorian London, applies for one last job. If that doesn't pan out, it's a topple in the Thames for him. The job advertises 'Some Danger Involved!' What an understatement. Winning the job was a snap, considering what happens to him afterwards. He is taken on as an assistant to a private enquiries agent - today's PI. While looking into the upside-down crucifixion of a young rabbinical student with his employer Barker, poor Tom is subjected to all sorts of physical danger up to and including several attempts on his life. While the action is more than satisfying, the pace seemed a trifle slow for such a physical story - forgivable because the plot is unique and the history of Judaism so complete and necessary to the storyline. Some Danger Involved is Will Thomas's first novel, although he has had many short stories published. The early 1900s London setting is so thorough, one would suspect Thomas had lived in that time and city. Barker is Sherlock Holmes-like, which is forgivable because he is so much his own man. (He does not shout 'The game's afoot.') Tom plays Barker's younger Watson. His naiveté is delightful and it's fun to watch his emergence into a world all too new to him.
