Roco Sandoni didn’t know there was a baby inside the Buick convertible he won at Fumicelli's Bar and Grill. If he'd known he probably would've left her in the parking lot, but instead he took the car home, parked it in the driveway, and went up to bed. His sister Rhodi, born with a caul over her head, was a women who allowed her feelings to lead her. The feeling she had that night led her to the Buick where she found a baby bundled in a leather jacket with the name Lucy scrawled on an attached note.

For the five Sandoni sisters, Lucy, now called Lucretia, is the child of their dreams. Having five aunts as mothers might not have been easy, but it was easier than having none. Rhodi becomes Lucretia's favorite. She teaches the child about feelings and signs and explains how her uncle won her in a poker game. Rhodi calls her Lucy Buick, and tells her that one day Lucy will find her real family.

By the time Lucy is eighteen the aunts have died, with the exception of Rhodi. When Rhodi dies too, just before Lucy's birthday, she knows the time has come for her to find her real family. Still not sure how to escape from her uncles (who intend her to marry a wealthy old man who will help extend the family business), Lucy is set free by a fire in the family's factory where she is supposed to be working. Before anyone realizes she is still alive, she sets off cross country by train, sure that the signs will lead her where she needs to go.

Kept company by visits from her dead aunts, Lucy travels from New York to Iowa, where she stops for a while in Gardenia. Although this magical story is light on conflict, Lucy follows her heart while learning just what love and family really are.
