Established chick lit writer Erica Orloff (author of Mafia Chic, Diary of a Blues Goddess) addresses breast cancer, in Do They Wear High Heels In Heaven? Lily and Michael have been friends for years, although their lives are very different. Lily is a single, divorced mother to two children and Michael is a gay man who neither married nor had children. Lily and Michael are both writers, who share a wonderful sense of humor and enjoy spending time together regularly.

When Lily hits the big 4-0 and is given a writing assignment on breast cancer awareness, the newspaper foots the bill for a routine mammogram. While Lily does not cherish the idea of having her breasts flattened like pancakes for her upcoming article, her boss insists that her experiencing the mammogram is important for the article. When a lump is discovered in Lily's breast and she finds out that she has the 'big C', she turns to her best friend, Michael, for support. Naturally, Lily is scared but she is also determined not to let cancer drag her down. And if Lily does not make it, she wants to go out in style – no frumpy wigs and wallowing alone at home for her. Michael is there for Lily ever step of the way and the two share a special friendship that can only be found between platonic friends of the opposite sex.

Orloff's entertaining, breezy writing style makes for an uplifting read despite the serious nature of Lily's illness and the responsibilities that Michael will take on if she does not survive. I enjoyed reading about the friendship between Lily and Michael, as well as the new relationships both characters form as the story progresses (which I will leave the reader to discover). Fans of Orloff will enjoy this new release, as will chick lit fans looking for a novel with more depth than the typical fare.
