P
atricia Smiley, author of
False Profits
, brings her readers another segment of Tucker Sinclair's unusual life. A college flame, Evan Brice, shows up after a ten-year hiatus. As complicated as this could be, it is exacerbated by Brice's murder.
T
ucker is once again thrown into a world of suspicion, suspense, and, yes, even danger. She has inherited a beach cottage in California and likes her life, struggling though she might be to make ends meet. To make matters worse, her mother and her erstwhile boyfriend move in with her as they search for just the right house to buy. Mama is a hoot. But, her dog! That is something else. Tucker wants custody of Muldoon, a Westie.
A
s with her first book, Smiley writes well while showing a great sense of humor. I found myself chuckling throughout, when not downright laughing out loud. But the suspense and action are there in bucketsful. The characterizations are marvelous. I swear I have met some of these people in real life. Treat yourself to a fun and suspenseful read in
False Profits
.
