Having just made detective first-grade, Jane Bauer is back at work with the NYPD. She survived a near fatal attack in Murder in Hell's Kitchen (if you missed that book, rectify that mistake right now – too good to miss) and is approaching her next case with little hope of proving that a man who starved to death was murdered.

The death was classed as the suicide of a schizophrenic. Jane's trail leads down many roads pointing the way to false or misleading accounts of the man and his background. Jane and her team slowly delve into the last days of the man's life and find themselves saddened by the lack of help given to a man who was trapped by his own demons.

Exciting, suspenseful, fast-paced and with characters that leap from the pages, Murder in Alphabet City is written well, by a woman who understands what drives us. I do hope Lee Harris has more excitement planned for Jane Bauer.
