In this fun and very funny book, Mavis, Attalee and Elizabeth are joined at the Dollar Store by Chenille and Chiffon – sisters who haven't seen much of each other for twenty years. Chiffon loses her husband of ten years to a movie star – hard to do when you live in Cayboo Creek, Georgia. Left at home with three children, she learns that he has had his last paycheck forwarded to him in Hollywood from the local NutraSweet plant, leaving Chiffon more than a dollar short. Once again, Gillespie focuses on friendships and family relations while delivering large dollops of humor. The chapter headings alone are worth the purchase price of the book - 'Consciousness is that annoying time between naps'; 'Some family trees bear lots of nuts'; 'If our food and drink don’t meet your standards, please lower your standards'; or 'I get enough exercise just pushing my luck'. Chiffon and Chenille have a lot to learn from each other – including how to handle their harridan of a mother. They also realize that there are a lot of bumps in life's road and how they handle them is up to themselves. A Dollar Short is a fun read, one that may make you stop every now and then between the laughs to reflect on your own life. There are lessons to be learned.
