Carly May is a genealogist commissioned to research the family of the eccentric aunt of New Mexico's multi-millionaire governor. Daniel Duran, after a lifetime of fighting for other people's beliefs, comes back to Taos to live for himself for a while. The two fall into the tumultuous family pasts of both the aunt and the governor. Nasty happenings work to drive Carly away from her goal. But not knowing her own history has made her determined to finish the job she has taken on. Drugs, good ol' boys, poachers, incest, illegitimate births as well as doubtful DNA, are easy to follow as this book delves into the blood lines of two of New Mexico's distinguished families. Close attention must be paid to the trees of both families, that curl around each other's limbs. Lowell weaves a tight plot that never deviates from the straight line to a satisfying but surprising conclusion. As usual, her characterizations are right on the money, so that one can visualize each player as they carry out the tasks necessary to their part of the script. The dialogue rolls off the tongue, laced with great humor. I hate to be greedy, but I look forward to the author's next book.
