Designed for the 'novice birder', it features 83 species of the province's most common birds. Two pages are devoted to each species, including colorful illustrations, common and scientific names, and such natural history information as habitat, nesting habits, range maps, voice identification, similar-looking species, as well as one or two interesting facts about each bird. There's also a complete glossary of terms, and a colour coded reference chart, along with a checklist of over 300 species of birds commonly spotted in Alberta. The short introduction discusses birding in Alberta and provides additional contact information through organizations like Federation of Alberta Naturalists and the Calgary Outdoor Council. Compact Guide to Birds of Alberta is a colourful, concise and well-bound publication. It's filled with many facts that I found interesting about bird species common to my province. If you live in Alberta, whether you enjoy watching our feathered friends in their natural habitat while camping or hiking or prefer to do so in your own backyard surroundings, make sure you keep this new guide close by as a handy reference.
