Jackie is a trial lawyer who suffers from learning difficulties. She can neither read nor work with numbers. Yet she managed to pass the bar! Which thrills her, when a law school teacher, now a district court judge, asks her to defend him from a kidnapping and murder charge. He was the teacher who told her she would never make it as a lawyer. And now he needs her. A college co-ed was spirited away from a local nightspot and was found, many days later, running through the snow naked, bound and chained. Her flirting with a life away from Daddy was her undoing. Jackie is unsure of her client's innocence but knows he is entitled to a fair trial. She and her assistant Pilar work together to blast the district attorney's case out of the water. The courtroom scenes ring of authenticity. As well they should, since Stephanie Kane has been a criminal attorney, partner in a top Denver law firm. Extreme Indifference is fast-paced, tightly written, and very hard to put down. Its only fault is that it ends. I especially like Jackie – faced with odds most people would surrender to, she found her own way to be where she wanted to be. Even when her life is at stake, she pulls through with courage and conviction.
