The 2004 Commemorative Stamp Yearbook highlights the creative legacy of American artists in a variety of fields. In her Introduction, Kitty Carlisle Hart (whose late husband Moss Hart is honored on one of the stamps), tells us that 'art can be powerful even when it graces the smallest canvasses.' Lovely photographs and illustrations accompany text explaining the creation of stamps which honor people, places and topics from Paul Robeson, Dr. Seuss, John Wayne, and Lewis & Clark, to 'Sickle Cell Disease Awareness', the 'Art of the American Indian', the 'Pacific Coral Reef', and 'Holiday Celebrations'. The 'Candy Hearts' stamp is sweetly nostalgic, and those celebrating the 100th anniversary of Dr. Seuss (featuring The Cat in the Hat), and Disney 'Friendship', are delightful. The John Wayne stamp is based on a portrait during the filming of Stagecoach (one of my favorite John Ford movies), while the 'Cloudscapes' series impressed me in its dramatic images of the power of nature.
