When Sable Duchesne arrives at an abandoned warehouse to meet gubernatorial candidate (her estranged father) Marc LeClare, she has no idea that she's walking into a trap. Someone doesn't want the rest of the world to know about Marc and Sable's relationship, and would resort to murder to keep it quiet. After bludgeoning Marc to death and attacking Sable, the killer torches the warehouse to cover up the crime. Only a quick rescue response saves Sable from a fiery death.

Investigating the case is detective J. D. Gamble, son of a wealthy Creole family and the man who broke Sable's heart ten years before, while both were at college. Sable wants nothing more to do with J. D. or his family, but he has other ideas. No other woman has compared to Sable. From the moment they meet at the crime scene, he vows that he won't let her run from him again. But a cunning killer repeats attempts on Sable's life, forcing the duo into hiding. Long hours of confinement loosen pent-up emotions. They eventually learn to trust one another, and come to the realization that they were meant to be together.

Jessica Hall (who also writes in other genres and under other pseudonyms) is making quite a name for herself in romantic suspense. Into the Fire, one of a new series, presents multi-layered characterizations, a great secondary cast, intricate and believable plotting, a sultry setting, and plenty of action (not to mention a scorching romance). All these elements meld wonderfully into a book you'll find hard to put down. Don't despair when you finally do - Hall has already released the sequel, Heat of the Moment, which follows the story of J.D.'s elder brother, Fire Marshal Cort Gamble and his incendiary relationship with detective Terri Vincent.
