A word of warning. When you pick up James Grippando's new novel, Hear No Evil, be prepared to spend the time it takes to finish the book. This is not a story you can put down once the first page is read. Miami attorney Jack Swyteck is approached by a woman who begs him to represent her. She is sure she is going to be accused of murdering her husband. Said husband, an officer stationed at Guantanamo Bay, was shot in the head while his ten year-old son slept in the next room.

As the case unravels, Jack is drawn personally into the woman's life by a revelation she makes regarding him. This intensifies the action, which, by the way, is fast-paced and tightly written. The Cuban population - both legal and illegal - comes into play. The murdered man's father is prominent in the story and I felt sympathy for him even while disagreeing with his position. I like the character of Jack Swyteck. An attorney with a private practice, he was once on the other side of the fence, filling the prosecuter's chair. He tries, sometimes with great difficulty, to keep both an open mind and his word at the same time.

The subsequent trial is covered, but not to the extent of having to read every detail. Grippando ties everything together with just a few sentences and then races on to continue the action. I thought I had the climax all figured out and came close. But no cigar. Grippando is no neophyte to the mystery scene. Hear No Evil is his ninth novel and I am already looking forward to his tenth.
