inda Greenlaw is one of the fortunate people of the world. She is a crackerjack commercial fisherman and also a darn good writer. Both avocations are lonely, arduous, and downright hard work. She manages them with her sense of humor unruffled.
A
ll Fishermen are Liars
is Greenlaw's third book in the ongoing saga of her life.
The Hungry Ocean
and
The Lobster Chronicles
were instant hits, as I'm sure this one will be. Two of my brothers at one time fancied themselves fisherfolk and went to sea in a commercial boat. One was seasick from the time they left the dock and the other decided the work was a trifle too demanding for his delicate sensibilties. They both left the sea.
L
inda stuck to her guns and became a respected name among her contemporaries. In this book, under the subtitle of '
True Tales from the Dry Dock Bar
', she recounts her worry over a long-time friend's health problems, and uses tales of the sea to lead up to her main topic - getting Alden to slow down. The Dry Dock Bar actually exists in Portland, Maine, as do the people the stories revolve around. As the night progresses, the tales unwind and everyone relives their own maritime adventures.
G
reenlaw tells fascinating stories, even for those of us who are not inclined to choose her course in life. There are truths to be learned in these tales. Whether the reader picks up a few life lessons or just enjoys a good yarn,
All Fishermen are Liars
is a great book.
