No amount of counseling has helped to alleviate her awful dreams about cloaked monsters chanting in a dark glade, nor the disturbing memories she relives of finding her beloved father impaled on spikes in his rose garden. Clare thought she could escape those memories by moving to New York and burying herself in her career. As the nightmares escalate she decides it's time to head face her fears once and for all. Cameron Rafferty bid good-bye to Emmitsboro at eighteen without looking back. He thought he'd found the perfect life and career in Washington D.C. as a homicide detective. But when personal tragedy strikes, Emmitsboro offers a refuge and a chance for Cam to redeem himself. His new position as sheriff is a good fit and the skeptical citizens are soon convinced the former 'hell raiser' has mended his wild ways. Clare's return is only icing on the cake - the girl he once teased and called 'Slim' has grown up into a beautiful and intriguing woman. Soon Clare and Cameron are lovers. Then the murders begin and somehow they're linked to Clare's nightmares and a hideous secret that involves some of the town's most influential citizens, men who will go to any lengths to protect the dark power they crave. Divine Evil was originally published in 1992 when Nora Roberts was first breaking into the thriller market. While the plot is relatively standard and one that leaves little doubt about how things will eventually play out, Roberts keeps the action and the romance between Clare and Cam at an interesting and believable level. Nor does she forget to add a few surprise twists. Her secondaries are also a rich and varied cast. Whether you're reading this story for the first time or re-visiting it, Divine Evil is well worth it.
