Based on the karate style of Shotokan, Robin Rielly's book, Karate Basics, provides many pointers for a beginner just starting out in karate, as well as for anyone interested in, and considering pursuing, this martial art. The author holds a sixth-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate.

Rielly provides an exellent step by step approach to finding a style that suits you, as well as the right school and a properly qualified instructor. He explains dojo etiquette, what to expect as a student, and the belt and grading system. He covers blocks, kicks and punches, with accompanying photos that make movements clear. Japanese terms are also introduced. Some of the karate techniques shown are a little complicated for someone who is just starting out, as they require flipping back and forth to relate terminology and meaning to the techniques.

However, Karate Basics is well researched and informative for both beginner and intermediate students, and holds interest for the advanced student as well. Though based on Shotokan karate, most of the content is applicable to all styles.
