Emily, Kay and Celeste have been friends for a long time and when their daughters head off to college, the lives of the three women turn in unexpected directions.

Kay throws herself into her job in order to divert her husband from attempts to rekindle their old intimacy. Celeste has been divorced for many years, raising her daughter on her own. She decides to create a new image for herself, placing a personal ad and having plastic surgery done. Emily wants to repair her relationship with her husband Doug, which has been damaged since their son was kidnapped many years before. The frequent business trips that Doug takes leave Emily suffering the pain of loneliness.

Brian Stasek, a recently widowed single father, comes to the small Massachusetts town from New York City. He moves into the empty apartment above Emily's garage. Emily feels a connection with Brian and his little girl, that Doug is not happy about. When Brian decides to investigate the disappearance of Emily's baby son, there are surprising results. Celeste finds a man who sounds wonderful, but is he who she thinks he is? And Kay continues to reject her husband's affections, to his bewilderment.

Barbara Delinsky weaves many different characters and plots together with surprising ease. This novel tells of three mothers facing the empty nest syndrome. I felt for these women's plights, in coming to terms with the children growing up, and living lives of their own, and recommend that you add Together Alone to the summer beach bag for an enjoyable read.
