Fireheart, once a despised 'kittypet', is now a valued ThunderClan Warrior, and his sister Princess's rambunctious offspring, Cloudkit, has been adopted into the Clan. As this 3rd in the Warriors series opens, Fireheart worries about the Romeo and Juliet style relationship between his best friend Graystripe and RiverClan's Silverstream, and still believes (but cannot prove) his Clan deputy Tigerclaw to be a traitor. It's 'leaf-bare' when prey is scarce. Fireheart dreams of lost kits being adopted into RiverClan, and of Spottedleaf, the medicine cat who was his friend before she died, warning him that 'water can quench fire'. Fireheart's decision to search for evidence against Tigerclaw leads him to question RiverClan cats as well as his old friend Ravenpaw (who is still in hiding). But, though Fireheart brings his evidence to Bluestar, she refuses to believe in her deputy's iniquity. When RiverClan's territory is flooded, Fireheart and Graystripe secretly come to their aid. Fireheart believes that helping the other Clans is StarClan's will, but knows that many in ThunderClan would not agree. It's easy to scent problems ahead for this brave Warrior, not only from his involvement with RiverClan, but from his attempts to thwart Tigerclaw's ambitions. Fireheart wonders what his dreams mean, and what will happen when ShadowClan and WindClan discover that ThunderClan shelters ShadowClan's vicious ex-leader Brokentail? There are battles ahead, complicated by mixed loyalties, treachery and tragedy. Fireheart is heartsore by the end of Forest of Secrets, and must take on new responsibilities, including the apprenticeship of his nephew, now Cloudpaw.
