Instead of writing about hard hitting crime or winged children, Patterson tells a poignant story of lost love in the most tender of words. Katie thinks she has found the love of her life in Matt. They conduct what he calls 'a long distance love affair', he living in Martha's Vineyard and she in Manhattan. She is hopelessly in love and believes him to feel the same. Suddenly he is gone from her life; the only thing he leaves behind is a diary. A diary written by his wife to their son Nicolas! He was married and never told her. As Katie forces herself to read the entries, she discovers that Matt and Suzanne were very much in love. As the diary unfolds, I figured out the gist of the story, but was not deterred from reading on. Patterson wove a lovely tale, one written with great sensitivity and the gentlest and most beguiling of tones. The climax knocked me for a loop. I had a good cry and moved on in my own life. But this haunting novel has stayed with me. Don't pass on Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas as just another romance. It isn't. It's a tribute to the ability we have to recover and continue when things seem as bad as they can get - an affirmation of life.
