L
isa Gardner always gifts her fans gripping, well developed mysteries. I've especially enjoyed her series featuring Detective D. D. Warren, vigilante Flora Dane, and FBI Agent Kimberly Quincy. This standalone,
You'll Be Sorry
, is as engrossing as the others. Readers are introduced to interior designer Raquel and her husband, financier Theo Collins, then shown them fleeing for their lives through snow covered woods. The resulting suspense pulls us through the back story.
A
fter personal tragedy, Raquel and Theo had bought an abandoned grand lodge, '
a fixer upper with a multimillion-dollar view and blood-soaked past
', in remote New Hampshire. Thirty years before, the Dixon owners (parents and four children) had vanished and were never found, though their dog remained. Young police chief Mandy Grady, determined to solve the cold case that stumped her father, starts digging through old files, and enlists the help of cold case unit Detective Sam Adams. A stray appears, to be taken in by Theo, and readers are given hints of dark secrets in Raquel's past. The dog digs up an old well, which contains a skull. They also find a historic midwife's ledger and the skeletal remains of an infant.
T
he plot continues to thicken, clues pointing to Mandy's father and a local Wiccan hermit, Isla. The bones of five Dixons are found - what happened to the sixth? Soon, in a shocker of an ending, all secrets (past and present) are revealed.
