I
've long enjoyed Ragnar Jónasson's
Dark Iceland
and
Hidden Iceland
mystery series, especially having travelled in Iceland myself.
The Mysterious Case of the Missing Crime Writer
is the second in another series, starring detective Helgi Reykdal (whose own mystery reading list is shared at the beginning).
I
t begins on the 2002 publication day for Elin Jonsdottir's final book, with filming begun on a series based on her novels, and moves on in time to 2012, the account interspersed with a 2005 author interview and flashbacks to disturbing events decades before. In 2012, Helgi's Reykjavik CID boss hands him the case of a missing crime writer - Elin Jonsdottir.
H
elgi begins to interview Elin's closest associates - her publisher Rut, her accountant Thor, and her best friend (a judge) Lovisa. They tell him that, though very different people, they all look out for each other. Complicating matters, Helgi's new girlfriend Anita is being stalked by his alcoholic ex, Bergthora.
H
elgi solves one riddle in the author's past only to stumble on another - and a very cold case whose truth Elin was determined must come out. Helgi does finally solve the case but then his own situation ends on a cliffhanger.
