Karen Robards has long written action filled romance novels like Night Magic and Obsession. She delivers that same engaging mix again in The Moonlight Runner. Its lead is nurse Rynn Carmichael, who works in a convalescent home for British officers, set up in a private seaside mansion (Ballyshannon Court) after the Armistice.

Rynn's life changes dramatically when she overhears an officer talking of a trap set for IRA gunrunners. She realizes that her fiance Donal O'Reilly is one of them, along with other childhood friends of both. She runs to warn them and ends up fleeing with them aboard a small boat. They run into a trawler, captained by Major Owen Maguire, a war hero and a wealthy Irishman. He takes them aboard and puts the men ashore on a tiny island with a small settlement. They plan to make for America.

Rynn returns but quickly comes under suspicion. Her favorite patient, Lord Thomas, comes to her rescue and takes her to England. There - and later back in Dublin - her life continues to intersect with those of Donal and Owen, and she helps the Irish cause. Violence escalates, with Owen and Rynn caught right in the middle. Though the outcome is predictable, getting there still makes an engrossing read!
