E. A. Jackson's Missing is what seems at first a standard, thorough police procedural. Detective Inspector Martha Allen takes on a very upsetting case in a 1990 London heatwave, when a baby (Bella Carpenter) is taken from her hotel room through an open window.

Of course, the parents are distraught, until young Nell Beatty walks into the police station with a baby she says she found on a bench. Mystery solved, press placated, parents overjoyed. But Nell's story smells off to Martha, who wants to keep digging but is told to close the investigation. She becomes obsessed.

Fast forward thirty years and police superintendent Martha receives a report of Nell Beatty's death, by strangulation. She investigates in her own time and finds a long record of arrests for Nell Beatty. She suspects Tom Carpenter so looks for a connection, but discovers that everything she had believed was wrong. The conclusion is quite a surprise!
