Joanna is now married to novelist Butch Dixon, and they have small Denny and Sage at home, High Lonesome Ranch. Jennifer, Joanna's daughter from her first marriage, just graduated from police academy and they all look forward to celebrating Christmas together.

hen a young boy's body is found in the Arizona desert, Joanna catches the case. She soon determines that a prolific serial killer is at work and finds links to cold cases in other regions. The book's
Prologue
introduces the reader to the killer, Steve, as a troubled child who heard voices, and got away with murdering his grandmother - and, over time, many others!

he story moves back and forth in time, following Steve's movements and kills as well as Joanna's investigation - done while helping prepare for Jenny's wedding. Clues point to a
Hands Across the Border
charity and a local respected retired teacher who drives a truck for them. Joanna solves quite a number of cold cases when she closes this one.
