Alison Gaylin writes unusual mysteries - think Trashed, And She Was, and What Remains of Me. Here's another equally compelling tale, with a strong streak of horror, We Are Watching. In it, Magnolia 'Meg' Russo and her family become the target of crazed conspiracy theorists.

First, her husband Justin dies in a car accident triggered by bizarrely behaving young men in a car that swerves beside theirs and honks repeatedly. Grieved and feeling responsible for Justin's death, Meg reopens a local bookstore, but odd happenings and online threats continue. Seems that thirty years before, Meg had written a YA novel entitled The Prophesy, that a spreading social media cult has come to believe is linked to Satanism.

They're after both Meg and her reclusive father, Nathan Lerner, a famed, rather neurotic musician, accused by the same kooks of being an evil warlock. Nathan has long been in hiding. Meg's daughter Lily, also a talented musician, is targeted and manipulated as well, but in a different way. Both question who they can trust as events - and violence - escalates.

Meg, Nate and Lily all do what they can to prevent the threat looming like a sword of Damocles over their family. They survive, but it's close, and the author injects a final shocking twist in the ending.
