with interest. In eighteenth century rural Wales, Dr. Henry Talbot has journeyed to work as a private physician for Lord Julian Tresilian. It's soon clear that he left London a cloud, dismissed from his hospital post.
L
ord Julian shows off his collection of expensive books and treasures from his excursions abroad. As he does, Henry realizes that his host is a dying man. He learns that the true mistress of the house is Linette Tresilian, whose mother Gwen married his brother. Gwen is apparently a madwoman. Linette handles all the business of the estate and dresses as a man. She cares for her people.
T
he villagers are superstitious and hostile, but Henry gradually earns their trust. He learns that his predecessor died unexpectedly and suddenly, and he starts digging. Someone shoots at him. Gradually, a dark history is revealed, and a shocking connection to his own past. If you enjoy a historical mystery with a strong thread of horror, then jump right in.
