Lalli's Are You Sara? so opened The Plus One with high expectations, and was not disappointed. There seems to be a whole new sub-genre of wedding mysteries, but Lalli takes this one to the limit by killing off both bride and groom early in the story. The victims, Radhika Singh and Raj Joshi, are scions of very wealthy Indian-American families. Guests are offered a week's pampering at the ultra-luxury Los Cabos resort. The lead is grad student Shaylee 'Shay' Kapoor. As the plus one of the best man, Caleb Prescott III, Shay stays with him in an exclusive villa with its own infinity pool and an ocean view. Soon after Shay arrives, the wedding coordinator finds the bride and groom shot dead in the villa next door. The story then moves back and forth in time to show how Shay and Caleb met, who Shay really is, and how things got to this point. Caleb lies to the authorities about the night before the murder - why? There are rumors that it was a hit by a drug cartel. Shay starts digging and the violence escalates, while everyone lies to the police. Can she survive the investigation? Of course we know she will, but barely, and Lalli delivers a final strong twist of an ending.
