Den of Iniquity is the twenty-third (!) in J.A. Jance's mystery series starring former Seattle homicide cop J. P. Beaumont. At this stage in the series, he's retired, married to Bellingham, Washington chief of police Mel, and enjoys walks with his Irish wolfhound Sarah (despite 'two fake knees').

The mystery opens in 2018 Seattle, where Darius, volunteering at a food bank, is murdered - his death is deemed accidental. Fast forward to 2020 when Beau's eighteen-year-old grandson Kyle shows up unexpectedly from his home nine hours drive away. Kyle wants to finish off his senior year staying with Beau and Mel. Beau's daughter Kelly is not amused. Beau learns that his son-in-law has got himself into a real mess.

A friend in Seattle PD (who works with Beau's son Scott) asks for his help to investigate Darius's murder. Beau starts digging and soon finds similar killings designated as accidental. Vance tells us that 'Each was a pebble dropped into some family's existence that sent long-lasting ripples of sorrow and hurt in every direction.' A 'serial killer on steroids' is at work, but what's the motive?

The police take over but Scott keeps Beau in the loop as they close the case, all this during the pandemic. Of course, Beau sorts out his family mystery as well, in a most satisfying read.
