The Dark Wives follows The Rising Tide as the eleventh in Ann Cleeves' deservedly popular mystery series starring strong willed, heavy set DI Vera Stanhope and her colleagues in Northumberland, England. As this episode opens, Vera is still brooding over the death of young DC Holly Clarke in the previous one.

This time, a man walking his dog finds the body of young Josh Woodburn near a home for troubled teens in the coastal village of Longwater. Josh didn't show up for work there the previous night. At the same time, a resident of the home, fourteen-year-old Chloe Spence, has disappeared. Is she another victim, the killer, or did she flee after witnessing the crime?

Vera and Joe investigate, along with a new team member, Rosie Bell, who is very different from Holly. Searching for Chloe, they find a second body. They follow the money trail. Turns out that Josh was making a documentary about private children's homes and turned up unsavory facts about their focus on profit rather than care.
