Linda Castillo's The Burning is sixteenth in her Amish mystery series starring Painters Mill chief of police Kate Burkholder. She left her Amish community after being raped by a neighbor, worked for sixteen years as a big city cop, and returned to the heart of Amish country. She's recently married John Tomasetti, with whom she's shared many cases over the years. He's now an agent with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

This episode opens on a horrific killing - Amish Milan Swanz was tied to a post and burned alive. Swanz had led a troubled life, had divorced his wife and been excommunicated. The case comes too close to home when Kate finds a family address in the victim's notebook - did her brother have a beef with Swanz? Readers are shown a vigilante who has his eye on Kate. He attacks her and warns her off, but we know she will proceed anyway.

Though the mayor tells her to take a break, given her family involvement, Kate and Tomasetti continue to investigate. Kate finds cold cases that seem related, leading herself and Tomasetti into extreme danger in a close encounter with a backhoe and with fanatical religious zealots. Don't miss this extraordinary series.
