Sarina Bowen's The Five Year Lie introduces readers to Ariel Cafferty, mother of four-year-old Buzz in Portland, Maine. Ariel has been working part time as office manager for the family business (Chime Co.) and living in her mother's backyard. In her spare time, she creates blown glass pieces.

As the story opens, she's fleeing with Buzz on a long bus trip to Michigan. What led to this? She received an urgent text message from Army veteran Drew Miller, who's been gone for years. Drew had worked at Chime as a programmer and fell for the boss's daughter. They had a brief fling but he left when her father died. Soon afterwards, she found his obituary.

Ariel starts digging, with the help of another Chime programmer, Zain. The story moves back and forth in time to reveal Drew's mission at Chime, as well as very sinister uses of the company's technology, tied into police and judicial corruption. Readers accompany Ariel and Buzz to Michigan, where she finally finds answers - and danger. The Five Year Lie is a gripping read.
