I
'm a longtime fan of Nicci French's mysteries, written by the husband/wife team of journalists Nicci Gerrard and Sean French. They deliver dark psychological mysteries with very unusual premises, like
Land of the Living
and
The Favor
, as well as their outstanding Frieda Klein tales.
T
his one focuses on a thirty year old case, and the podcast that churns the waters around it once again. When Alec Salter turned fifty in Glensted, East Anglia, his warm-hearted wife Charlotte didn't show up at his birthday party - or ever again. Alec was unconcerned though their four children became more and more worried. The youngest, fifteen-year-old Etty, and her neighboring friend Morgan found the latter's father Duncan dead in the river. The police concluded murder/suicide.
F
ast forward thirty years when Morgan and his older brother return to Glensted to make a podcast about what happened to Charlotte and Duncan. They want to interview the Salters, which doesn't go over well. Tension rises, dark secrets are revealed, and there's another murder. Detective Inspector Maud O'Connor is sent from London to lead the investigation to a shocking conclusion.
