Candice Fox, author of twisty action-packed thrillers like The Chase and Gathering Dark does it again in Devil's Kitchen. As in her previous novels, she gives us leads on both sides of the law.

The law breakers this time are also first responders, the legendary crew of Engine 99 who've fought New York City blazes for years. They've also set them, as cover for heists of banks, jewelry stores and art galleries. Their ruthless, psychopathic leader is Matt Roderick.

As the story opens, the crew is in a forest where Matt accuses its newest member, Andy Nearland, of being a cop. Ben Haig had introduced her to the others and he's also under suspicion, as they are known to be sleeping together.

That introduction sets the scene and heightens the suspense. The author then goes back in time to show how things got to the point, starting with Ben contacting a detective after the disappearance of his partner Luna and her small son. Andy works for ambitious FBI Agent Tony Newler.

There's little trust on either side. Newler is after case closure at any cost. Andy wants to help Ben find out what happened to Luna. Ben doesn't trust his fire crew after another member was killed. Andy and Ben mistrust each other. It all comes to a violent crescendo as they embark on their final job. Don't miss this one!
